Chapter Twenty-two
A week later Adam announced that heâd found Poppy a flat. Poppy was both surprised and reluctant to move further into the human world. She longed to be, wrapped in the healing embrace of her community or at least discover if she was the only survivor. Adam ignored her protestations and was very persuasive.
âWe all need a breathing place between our past and futures. You and Kane can stay for as long or as little time as you want,â he said as he helped her move the boxes of Kaneâs possessions, which sheâd managed to collect from his room. âPlease indulge me. Mad as it seems I want to make sure youâre both safe. Thereâs an evil out there,â he added, placing a box on the floor and waving his arm towards the door.
Poppy impressed by Adamâs capacity for kindness relented. She knelt on the floor and began unpacking a box of kitchen utensils, which Judy had given her to use. The mood was light and airy. Adam laughed about how ugly the girls were at the factory. In between conversation and laughter, Poppy took hurried glances at Adam. She found the multi-faceted man intriguing sometimes he was nervous and constrained at others bold and jovial. Mostly he reminded her of a bright lily floating on the scum of a stagnant pool. More and more she ignored the voices in her head, which warned her that humans were deceitful and scheming. However, stories from her childhood about the treachery of man and how her kind had been duped because of their trusting nature returned and repeated in her mind whenever Adam wasnât about.
Poppy went into the kitchen and began placing cutlery in the drawers. In the next moment, she felt the air chill, goosebumps sprung out on her arms, and she inwardly shuddered. I hope the heating works, she thought. I wouldnât be able to make a fire in here. Shuddering again, she felt Adamâs eyes examining her from behind her back.
Poppy twisted around and saw Adam standing in the doorway, holding Kaneâs music box in his trembling hands. He appeared cold and shaky as though heâd plunged into icy water but from his eyes beamed a burning rage.
âWhere did you find this?â
âKane found it in an antique shop,â she said, feeling her hair stand up on the back of her neck.
âHave you looked inside?â he said, staring at Poppy with an attitude of dismay and disbelief.
Poppy shook her head and felt panicked.
âYou women are all bitches! Whenever I try and help you always make it go wrong,â he waved his free arm in the air and glared at her with a confused tortured expression. âI try so hard to be nice.â
âI donât know what you mean.â
âThat cow Judy was meant to throw it all away. I told her hanging onto the past would destroy her, besides she needed to rent Sandraâs room out for the money. I donât want to sleep amongst a dead girlâs possessions,â he shouted, and his brow wrinkled revealing an internal misery.
